“The Myth of Amazons”

ART Dance Theater Company has performed in various festivals, both in Greece and abroad. It was the official Greek representative in 2007 at the 10th European Dance Festival of Cyprus (Limassol), in 2008 at the Opening Ceremony of 6th Cultural Festival of Beijing for the Cultural Olympiad China 2008.

“The Myth of Amazons” is a dance performance based on the ancient Greek myth with originally composed music.

The performance made its debut in 2013 during the 4th Cultural Festival Bouboulina’s Museum in Spetses, Greece.  In 2014 ‘Amazons’ was chosen from the Greek Ministry of Culture to represent Greece at Festival International de Sousse 2014 as well as at other festivals around Tunisia.

In 2017 at the Year of Cultural Cooperation between Greece and China (Guangzhou & Shunde -Foshan), and in 2022 as part of the activities to celebrate Tirana as the European youth capital of 2022.

The Amazons were a mythical race of warrior women who were said to be descended from the God of war Ares and the nymph Harmony. Their home was Themiscyra, in the Black Sea region. The Amazons were trained in the use of the bow and the sword, and they were more than equal to any man in their bravery and fighting skills.

In the performance through the movements and the art of dancing we try to reveal the atmosphere of their way of living with focus on the two most famous myths -the theft  of Queen Hippolyta’s golden belt by Hercules and the fight amongst Penthesíleia with Achilles, at the end of which, Achilles kills Penthesíleia and as he removes her silver helmet, astonished from her beauty falls in love with her.
