Western Balkans Youth Orchestra Youth Podium

Western Balkans Youth Orchestra

The Western Balkans Youth Orchestra was founded on a simple yet powerful belief: that music can bring people together where words and politics often fail. In a region still shaped by the memories and consequences of conflict following the breakup of the former Yugoslavia, the orchestra creates a unique space where young musicians from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds can meet—not as representatives of past divisions, but as partners in a shared artistic journey. Inspired by the spirit of the European Summer Music Academies held in Pristina since 2012, the orchestra was officially established in 2019 under the artistic leadership of conductor and pianist Desar Sulejmani.

From its inception, the initiative has grown into a professional educational platform for young musicians from the Western Balkans, the European Union, and beyond. What begins as a group of individuals from different traditions and experiences gradually transforms into a unified orchestra through days of rehearsals, shared challenges, and moments of musical discovery. Through intensive rehearsal periods, artistic residencies, and concert tours, participants receive high-level orchestral training from experienced professional musicians and mentors from Europe and beyond while developing the skills required for international artistic collaboration. In this environment, musical excellence goes hand in hand with cultural exchange, dialogue, and personal development. By bringing together young artists from diverse backgrounds and encouraging them to learn, perform, and grow together, the Western Balkans Youth Orchestra not only nurtures the next generation of musicians but also strengthens connections between cultures, building bridges that extend far beyond the concert stage.

Beyond the rehearsal room, the experience is equally about human connection. Living, practicing, and performing together over many days allows the musicians to build friendships that transcend borders and stereotypes. On stage, these young artists demonstrate that cooperation is not only possible but powerful: dozens of individuals breathing, phrasing, and shaping sound together as a single musical voice. Their concerts across the Western Balkans and beyond make this spirit of collaboration visible and audible to audiences, transforming the orchestra into a symbol of hope and a living example of what the region’s future can look like.

Since its foundation, the initiative has been supported by several Rotary Clubs and international partners, whose commitment has helped establish a stable foundation for the project and its professional educational activities. Through this network of supporters, institutions, and local partners, the orchestra continues to expand its reach and impact. Today, the Western Balkans Youth            Orchestra stands not only as a musical ensemble but as a cultural bridge—empowering a new generation of artists to become ambassadors of dialogue, understanding, and cooperation in a region where such voices are deeply needed.
