Filarmonica del Teatro Comunale di Bologna

The Filarmonica del Teatro Comunale di Bologna is a symphony orchestra founded in 2008 by the musicians of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Its mission is to promote and develop an organization committed to the diffusion of classical music, guaranteeing artistic excellence. It prides itself on being, together with the one of the Scala in Milan, the only existing Filarmonica of a national opera house today, dedicated to making music a shared patrimony and universal value.

Since its beginning, the Filarmonica has always curated refined programs for its audience in Bologna at the Manzoni Auditorium, including cycles dedicated to Rachmaninoff, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. Over the years, the Filarmonica has hosted many distinguished guest soloists and conductors, among these the pianists Ivo Pogorelich, Philippe Entremont, Alexander Lonquich, Lilya Zilberstein, Angela Hewitt, Louis Lortie, Daniil Trifonov, Alexander Romanovsky, Alexander Malofeev and Benedetto Lupo, the violinists Gidon Kremer, Sarah Chang, Julian Rachlin, Sergej Krilov, Baiba Skride, Anna Tifu and Marc Bouchkov, the cellists Misha Maisky, David Geringas and Kian Soltani, playing under the direction of Sir Neville Marriner, Gerd Albrecht, Mikhail Pletnev, Alexander Vedernikov, Gábor Takács-Nagy, Paul Goodwin, Aziz Shokhakimov and Michele Mariotti. From 2014 to 2019 the Filarmonica was invited annually to perform in Japan, including concerts at Tokyo’s Suntory Hall and Orchard Hall.

Led by Principal Conductor Roberto Abbado since 2022, the Filarmonica del Teatro Comunale has begun a significant chapter in its history. Among its most recent engagements, the Filarmonica was invited to perform at the prestigious Enescu Festival in Bucarest with Maestro Abbado, and then at the renowned Amiata Piano Festival in Italy.

In addition to the symphony concerts, the Filarmonica also pays particular attention to chamber music, with the soloists of the Filarmonica performing regularly at the Palazzo Caprara Montpensier as well working in partnership with the municipality of Bologna, bringing chamber music concerts outside of the city center, with the aim of diffusing classical music in the surrounding community.

The Filarmonica has a notable experience in music recordings, thanks to its precious collaboration with the label Deutsche Grammophone, which has led to receive international acclaim, including the prizes ECHO KLASSIK 2009 and 2013.
