More than 400 young musicians have been part of this unique ensemble, and conductors and artistic directors of the orchestra have included F. Muratovski, G. Korunovski, S. Nikolovski-Gumar, V. Nikolovski-Gumar, M. Spasov, B. Tsanev, A. Remerajt, B. Chadlovska, O. Kondratenko, Misha Kats, Gianluca Martinenghi, and Elena Mitrevska.

As a recognition of their achievements, in 1995, the orchestra was invited to perform a concert in Budapest on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the World Federation of Music Youth. The orchestra has performed more than 100 concerts, receiving numerous positive reviews and acknowledgments. In addition to classical works from the world repertoire, the orchestra also includes pieces by contemporary Macedonian composers in its repertoire.

For 37 years, the final concert of the orchestra’s summer session has been part of the program of the “Ohrid Summer” festival, and in recent years, it has also been featured in the “Skopje Summer” and “Bitola Summer” festivals. Since 2018, the orchestra has been named after the Macedonian conductor Sasha Nikolovski-Gjumar.
